"When are you interviewing the Haim sisters?" a message pops up. "I was hoping to ask if I can be their fourth member." However, there remains a key snag: I also longs to be the Haims' additional sibling. What's more, we are in plentiful company. Several celebrated supporters have also begged for the honor. One thing is obvious an irresistible appeal is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their path playing gigs at local delicatessens with their parents. Today, they are repeated Grammy contenders. Similar to the greatest ensembles, they're a close trio. Their videos often show them striding in harmony down the roads of Los Angeles. On stage, they play with such unfettered exuberance you find yourself thinking, "I want to be a piece of that, too." "The numerous instances on tour that audience members came up to us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I got a drum kit'," says Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "It is the ultimate honour. That is recognition in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can inspire others to make music." "And thus everyone are welcome to be the honorary member of Haim." The group's live shows have seen them ascend to headliner status of festival bills around the world. Award Recognition The group are connecting from a break, where they're resting up after an extensive tour in for their latest album, I Quit. They're right now reeling from the news it's been in the running for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first female band ever in contention for the award. "I follow the lists every year, so it kind of feels like a surreal movie when your name is read out," explains Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I hallucinating'?" The significance of the honor is deeply felt by the trio. "We truly set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a significant step," says Alana. "But we're just grateful for the women that came before us." Heartbreak and Candor The album came out of a period of personal change. All three sisters were single, and the music inhabits that unique in-between place where you're glad to be free, but not yet ready to start anew. The words follow endings and goodbyes. The sisters desire love, but not the kind of love they've had. You can hear them figuring out in real life who they aspire to be. "That's a perfect way of putting it, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a mantra. You have to make an effort in ignoring the noise and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'." The group claimed victory in a notable new artist list in 2013, and have later achieved multiple chart-topping albums. Evolution of Style That developed toughness called for a different sonic direction – more unpolished and powerful than any of the music the band had done before. For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that began with the drum sound. "Drums are such a specific thing, and I am so passionate about it," she states. "'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our book," quips Alana. "I always say, our albums cannot begin until we find the right drum sound." I Quit hones Haim's signature sound, combining organic instrumentation with contemporary rhythms and catchy pop tunes. Anecdotes and Collective Camaraderie The band's honesty fueled the album's rollout, where the sisters revealed some of their personal tales. A former partner left Este over a medical consideration. Alana recalled a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight. "During these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no light," notes Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's incredible." The group concluded a six-month tour, but state they plan to hit the road in the coming years. A Confident Future It's not difficult sense a change in the band. Now, Haim are more confident of their position in the industry. They're top-billed acts, with successful albums and an international following. But Haim will consistently be their primary commitment. "Me and my siblings have been performing since I was four," concludes Alana. "There is no alternative that we were supposed to do. And I'm really thankful we've reached this point and we're still going strong."
