2K Games has welcomed Ben Brinkman from the creators of Apex Legends to lead the development team at their internal studio, which is currently developing the forthcoming over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.

Leadership Change Comes After Mixed Response

The new appointee assumes the leadership position at 31st Union following the departure of former leader Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' disappointing unveiling last autumn.

Recently, 2K president a key figure notified team members about this organizational change through an internal memo, which highlighted that playtesting had indicated the requirement for a clearer direction.

Ismailer stated that the developers is now refining Project Ethos with a renewed approach, aiming to better meet player expectations.

Trend of Strategic Hires

This announcement echoes a similar step taken by the publisher in August, when they brought on an industry veteran from Blizzard to work on the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.

I know you all just completed your gathering - I trust you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the recent updates. Last time I shared you all a update, I stated the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most motivated and talented developers we have had the chance to partner with - and we’re eager for that partnership to continue.”

Through your commitment and versatility, particularly over the last year, you continue to prove that.

The community feedback from last fall’s Project ETHOS playtest was enlightening. It validated the appeal of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had work to do. It uncovered the need for a more distinct vision.

It has been motivating to see how far you’ve progressed. You accepted the criticism to consideration and reimagined Project ETHOS with a revitalized goal - one that’s positioned to achieve its ambition to our fans.

Our confidence in Project ETHOS strengthens every day. To further the incredible progress you’ve made, I’m excited to introduce Ben Brinkman as the incoming Studio Head of the team. After several months of discussions, he comes aboard us on the specified date.

His management and expertise in the competitive gaming field is considerable, having dedicated the past decade and a half producing and leading some of the most recognizable series in gaming, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, the battle royale hit.

Experience of the Incoming Leader

The appointee presently holds the role of executive producer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. Brinkman previously was employed at major gaming companies in multiple production roles on the iconic franchise series, and, earlier in his career, had periods at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Title Details and Vision

The upcoming game was unveiled in last year in conjunction with a community playtest. Initially, 31st Union presented the title as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an innovative step forward on the style."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in live gameplay to suit your personal playstyle," the description states. "Face the opponents with fresh skills, risks, and obstacles that evolve every match. Will you leave securely with your hard-earned loot? Or aim high, risk it all, and hope your team can achieve the highest spot? The choice is in your hands."

The game has not yet received an official debut schedule or consoles, but players can look forward to more updates as development advances.
