Users Discontinuing Slimming Injections Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that people who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users purchasing such treatments need to be aware of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a reversion to original mass in about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with older methods.

The team note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally have a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Experts believe the mechanism of the injections accounts for the amplified rebound.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Issue?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"It was like something activating and I was suddenly starving," said an individual.

This difficulty is worsened if patients have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is more common among women than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss hinges on combined lifestyle changes.
