Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing video review technology.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships this year.

Athletes will gain the right to contest certain calls made by the chair umpire, mirroring the system currently in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development follows just a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to review other situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is no limit on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined Draper was responsible for interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
